The Washington Post’s David Ignatius:
America is a nation at war. Yet we have no sense, even after Kerry has been nominated, of just what policies he would pursue in Iraq and the Middle East. There’s a three-alarm blaze outside and he’s telling us he supports the fire department.
Heh. Indeed. And, alas, that goes Iran and North Korea, too. (Hat tip: Kaus.)
I will almost certainly vote for Kerry because George W. Bush is just so objectionable in so many ways. But I would very much like to see JK articulate a more coherent policy vision across the board, instead of a hodge-podge of politically calculated rebuttals to Bush’s policies.
Hopefully the debates will clear things up.

and that’s why, barring an extremely close race in maryland, i’m voting for barney frank. of course, if the vote in maryland is going to be extremely close and the dems need all the support they can get, i’ll kinda be forced to vote for kerry . . . i’ll support him because he’s better than the rest, but . . .

Actually, it could be argued that a vote for Kerry is a vote for Barney Frank, considering that Frank is planning to run in the special election for Kerry’s Senate seat if Kerry wins the presidency.
July 31st, 2004 at 5:01:10 pm
Well, I support the fire department too. ;)
July 31st, 2004 at 5:04:57 pm
yeah, but i can’t vote for frank in the senatorial race . . . unless i can come up with some pseudonym and “raise the dead” as so many had done when the first JFK ran for president . . .
July 31st, 2004 at 5:09:38 pm
Yeah, but you can vote for him to have an opportunity to run for Senate by voting for Kerry. :)

and besides, when was the last time a debate “cleared everything up”? Might I remind you of the “clarity” of the last presidential debates? I give you two words:
1. Strategery
2. Lockbox

Personally I’d rather see him not make any concrete plans until he is in office and has ALL the info. Right now he can only act on so much info and I’d rather he not make a lot of promises he can’t keep.
July 31st, 2004 at 9:57:00 pm
Too bad he already made one promise he probably won’t be able to keep, when he pledged not to reduce Medicare beneifts.
I’m not demanding an absurd level of specifics in terms of his “concrete plans,” I just want to see him articulate a vision that is actually coherent. Currently I feel like he’s basically throwing out a focus-group-tested hodge-podge at us: a few bits of red meat to the liberal base (universal health care is a “right,” etc.) a whole lot of moderate/militaristic rhetoric that is so clearly designed for no other purpose than to win over swing voters, it’s very difficult to figure out which parts he’ll actually believe and which he won’t, and of course various inappropriate zingers (e.g., “opening firehouses in Baghdad while closing them here at home” — a classic false dichotomy, and one I’d expect to hear out of the mouth of an isolationist — Pat Buchanan, perhaps — rather than the Democratic nominee for president).
Of course, I know you gotta play the game, but when the vision is so incoherent that even someone who wants to support you can’t figure out what you actually stand for and what’s just rhetoric, well, to me, that’s a problem.
