Balloongate: A Dick Cheney moment
Posted by on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at 8:49 pm

Courtesy of Boinkette, the exact quote from Convention Director Don Mischer, aired live on CNN:

“Go balloons… Balloons… What is happening balloons? There’s not enough of them coming down. All balloons! Where the hell, there’s nothing falling! What the f**k are you guys doing up there?!?”

Drudge has an audio clip of Mischer’s outburst. It is not censored, so parental discretion is advised!

UPDATE: An Australian news site has a more complete — and barely bleeped — Balloongate audio clip.

Drudge has now posted a longer version of the quote:

“No confetti. No confetti yet. Go balloons. Go balloons. More balloons. All balloons. All balloons. Come on guys, let’s move it! Jesus. We need more balloons. I want all balloons to go, goddamn! No confetti. No confetti. No confetti. I want more balloons. What’s happening to the balloons? We need more balloons. We need all of them coming down! Balloons. Balloons. Balloons. What’s happening? They’re not coming down. All balloons. Where the hell! Nothing is falling. What the f**k are you guys doing up there? We want more balloons coming down. More balloons. More balloons.

There were several things that made me nauseous tonight let me list them out

    1) Willing Nelson DESTROYING one of the best songs ever written “Promise Land” by Bruce Springsteen
    2) Bruce Springsteen allowing Willie Nelson to sing “Promise Land”
    3) The playing of Bruce Spingsteen’s “No Surrender” as Kerry entered the convention
    4) Spingsteen allowing his music to be highjacked by a bunch of spineless, unthinking, record obscuring far far far far left liberals
    5) Bruce Springsteen even being a part of this hilarious wash cloth event where they did not have even the common decency to RESPECT our boys overseas
    6) John Kerry saying he will support real family values ( This from a man who has said in his own words he left his wife and family because they did not like public life HA some Family Values!
    7) Kerry speech in general where he harped on his 4 month long stint in Vietnam and never mentioned a SINGLE thing he had accomplished is decades of being a senator… guess he got nothing done

Dang I can not WAIT for the Republican convention
I am guessing the musical guests will not be the Dixie Chicks ( he call me a clairvoyant!)

  2. Brendan Says:

Toni, can you explain what you mean by:

“this hilarious wash cloth event where they did not have even the common decency to RESPECT our boys overseas”

    ???

I watched practically the whole convention, and had a lot of criticisms of it, but I never saw anyone disrespect our boys (and girls) overseas. Unless you mean that criticizing the president and his foreign policy is somehow “disrespectful”?

  3. Joe Loy Says:

Actually there was not merely an absence of any DISrespect, there were in fact a number of occasions when the delegates, responding to various speakers on the specific subject, rose as one to wildly cheer their respect & support for, and gratitude to, our soldiers on today’s battlefields — all waving the Stars & Stripes and chanting “USA! USA!” The last (and most dynamic) of the speakers eliciting this response was General Clark, who followed with a moving moment of silent prayer for the troops, including those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Clark’s, and Kerry’s, forceful reminders that Patriotism is not the property of one party were most welcome & altogether true. As was indicated by the parade of retired military officers supporting the Democratic nominee.

As for it being a “wash cloth event”, I dunno ’bout that but I think maybe the Republicans better throw in the Towel. :)

    ***************
As for Balloongate: WAW HAW HAW!! I saw it live & unBleeped — followed by Wolf Blitzer’s profuse apologies as Jeff Greenfield tried to keep a straight face. :)

  4. Toni Says:

    I said Respect…not disrespect…
No they did not criticize the solders of today but they also did not
find room on there stage for a veteran of the Afghan war or the Iraq war..
This could be because the solders of today turned down an offer to attend but I
    doubt the invitation existed.

Democrats may not agree with the reasons for going to Iraq
They may not agree with the current leadership’s choices but they also did not offer an
alternative… what will they do? All I heard was they would add more solders and
add more special forces … but they did not say what they would do with them…
in any certain terms well actually Kerry said the special forces would conduct terrorist
    operations but I digress…

I did not hear single mention of how they planned to fight the terrorist who
have said this year they feel it is OK to kill 2 million American children…

I am not a political science major, I am not a historian but I am aware that
We have not had another attack on our shores since 9/11
I am aware that the terrorist of the world are pouring into Iraq to fight us
and I think it is good that they have to fight our solders who are at least trained
rather than kill our office workers who are just trying to choke down a starbucks
coffee before dealing with there boss that morning

This election to me is about who can keep us safe
I did not hear anything from Kerry that made me feel he had a better alternative..

  5. Brendan Says:

“they also did not find room on there stage for a veteran of the Afghan war or the Iraq war”

Not true. Steve Brozak, a United States Marine who served in Iraq and who is now running for Congress from New Jersey, spoke Wednesday night. It was a good speceh, too.

  6. Toni Says:

I always love a “good speceh” lol OK OK PLEASE FORGIVE ME… I spell like a monkey in a space ship myself!!!

OK I missed that one… but the fact that he is a politician makes it to self serving….

  7. Brendan Says:

Oh, so now it has to be non-self-serving?? Come on now, that’s ridiculous. This is politics, EVERYTHING is self-serving! If they had featured a whole bunch of Iraq & Afghan war veterans, you probably would have said Kerry was being “self-serving” by trying to position himelf in these people’s shadow (or if you wouldn’t have, plenty of others would)… yet of course when Bush does that, it’ll be fine. Jeez.

Incidentally, Lt. Col. Brozak is a life-long Republican. He switched to the Democratic Party last year because he feels abandoned and alienated by the radicalism of the current GOP and the Bush Administration.

  8. Toni Says:

“Incidentally, Lt. Col. Brozak is a life-long Republican. He switched to the Democratic Party last year because he feels abandoned and alienated by the radicalism of the current GOP and the Bush Administration.”

    for me it is….
“Incidentally, Antonia Byersis a life-long Democrat. SHe switched to the Republican Party last year because She feels abandoned and alienated by the radicalism of the current DNC and the XXXX Administration.”

and no you are wrong… I would not have thought that self serving… the fact is there were many
speeches that did move me… made me think, made me feel good…etc..

I am not that shallow and I don’t think you give people enough credit…

and yes when Bush does just that I will feel proud!

  9. Brendan Says:

I know you’re not shallow… I just don’t understand how you can say “they didn’t put any veterans on stage” and then, when you find out they did, say, “oh, well that doesn’t count.” It just makes very little sense to me. Does the fact that he is going into politics for the first time make him less of a good man? Is he somehow degraded in your eyes because he wants to enter public service and try to make this country better?

  10. Toni Says:

I did not say it did not count…
    I said…
“OK I missed that one… but the fact that he is a politician makes it to self serving….”

In other words… they put him up there NOT because he was a veteran of the Afgan war…
but because he is a veteran who is now a Democrat…
that is self serving for the Democrats, Kerry and the mans political career….

Cunning however not exactly respectful of the troops giving there lives for us every day.

  11. Brendan Says:

Well OF COURSE he’s a Democrat, did you expect them to bring up a Republican veteran who supports Bush???

I don’t know, I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one. :)

  12. Andrew Says:

I don’t think anybody should be surprised that there are veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who are Democrats. The military may vote overwhelmingly Republican, but of course you are going to have individuals coming home and deciding they like Kerry’s soft-pedaling over Bush’s aggressiveness. This phenomenon is especially true of some of the Pentagon leadership, who are positively irked at the burden being placed on them by Rumsfeld to both win wars, build democracies, and transform the military to reflect a vision with which they disagree. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The most amazing thing about this administration has been the extent to which it has pushed for major policy initiatives and massive reforms and changes in many parts of the government, including parts traditionally associated with Republican favoritism, and it has been happening from Day One, not simply since 9/11. Clinton and Gore talked about prescription drug benefits and radical transformation of government; Bush has actually been doing it, and in the process, he’s rocked a lot of boats (which is to be expected). In that vein, I’m not surprised whatsoever that a Marine has decided he liked the old way better and has switched to Kerryism.

Brozak aside, I think this convention has been a major testament to the self-delusions of the Democrats, and I am increasingly confident of a Republican victory this November. Consider the fact that 75% of Democratic voters were against the Iraq war, 90% of the delegates at the DNC were against the Iraq war, and both members of the ticket voted for the Iraq war. Also consider how Vietnam is the evil war in the liberal psychosis, and now they are cheering a candidate who says he “defended” his country in that war. I mean, wait, I thought we were the evil, atrocity-committing aggressors? The whole Kerry candidacy has been perhaps the biggest charade ever attempted in a presidential election, and the only reason everybody is on board with it is because 1. they are united by their hatred for Bush, and 2. the poll numbers are so close, they really do feel they can actually pull this charade off and win. After the RNC, when the swords are tested in the heat of political battle, that charade will be exposed, and the Democrats will be defeated soundly. They would have had a much better chance with Dean, IMO.

  13. David Kreutz Says:

I wonder how much of the Republican Convention will be like their ads where they try and paint Kerry as a flip flopper and at the same time an extremem liberal, etc etc etc. and how much of it will be trying to come up with something positive Bush accomplished while in office (no signing the do-not-call bill into law doesn’t count.

  14. Brendan Says:

Toni, on the issue of Democrats not having “even the common decency to RESPECT our boys overseas,” I was watching Wesley Clark’s speech again on C-SPAN today (that’s right, I was watching Democratic convention reruns :), and I thought the following provides a pretty good rebuttal to your allegation:

Our country was attacked. We are at war. Our nation is at risk, engaged in a life-or-death struggle against terrorists who are seeking nuclear and biological weapons. And as I speak tonight, our Armed Forces are in combat.

Our freedoms were won in war, and protected by generation after generation of selfless service and sacrifice. From Bunker Hill to Bastogne, from the frozen hills of Korea to the jungles of Vietnam, from Kabul to Baghdad, American men and women in uniform have served with honor; they’ve given us so much, and they’ve asked for so little.

Tonight we honor them: our soldiers, our veterans, our families. I want to thank my wife, Gert, my son, Wesley, his wife and son and all the military families who stand behind those who serve. Now I ask you to observe with me a moment of silence to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we could have the freedom we exercise tonight.

Needless to say, the whole convention floor cheered wildly when he thanked the soldiers, and fell totally silent when he called for the moment of silence.
