So it’s baseball’s opening day, and since baseball is still technically our national pastime, the president obviously has gotta throw out the first pitch somewhere. (I’m pretty sure that’s in the Constitution, right after the part about being commander-in-chief of the armed forces.) But where?
The New York Yankees, “America’s team”? (Gag me.) The Chicago Cubs, everybody’s favorite underdog? The Texas Rangers, the team he used to own, for heaven’s sake?
Nosiree. President Bush threw out the first pitch at the home opener for the St. Louis Cardinals. That’s St. Louis, Missouri. That’s Missouri, a crucial battleground state in the November election.
But that’s just a coincidence, of course. :)

What is coincidence is my former boss, the campaign manager for Van Tran (I was the deputy campaign manager), Mr. Paul Hegyi, is now working for Jeanne Patterson, a Republican candidate hoping to win the targeted 5th Congressional District in that targeted state of Missouri. The presumptive Democratic opponent, while not yet decided because the primary is in August (what a welcome respite from California’s primary insanity!), is Kansas City Mayor Emanuel Cleaver II. Apparently the Democratic incumbent is stepping down.
