  1. Dane Says:

In other news, Brendan will soon have this new cell phone.

  2. Joe Loy Says:

    Dane: you’re right. Saints preserve us… :)

Re David Trimble, Glenn Reynolds agrees & approves, saying -

“YOU’VE HEARD THIS in the Blogosphere before, but apparently the idea is going mainstream:” [an excerpted & linked piece from The Guardian then reports - ]

“The Nobel Peace laureate and Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble called human rights organisations a ‘great curse’ yesterday and accused them of complicity in terrorist killings.

“‘One of the great curses of this world is the human rights industry,’ he told the Associated Press news agency at an international conference of terrorism victims in Madrid…”

Trimble probably has a point, as (I am constrained to admit) is not uncommonly the case. However, I would scarcely say that his articulation of an idea constitutes its “going mainsteam”.

The leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) is probably to the Right of most US Blogospherians. (Blogosphericals? :) Sure, the former First Minister of Her Majesty’s Province of Northern Ireland (aka the Statelet) is a Moderate in the unique political context of those benighted Six Counties. But in most other places he’d be deemed Way Starboard.

Then again, the new Mainstream in the Fourth Green Field (aka Norn Iron :) bears the Janus faces of -

(”Endings” side) the egregious Rev. Dr. Ian Paisley, the brimstone-breathing anti-Papist bigot who heads the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) which whipped Trimble’s UUP butt in the recent elections; and

(new “Beginnings” side ???) the IRA-connected (”connected”! Ha!!) Gerry Adams, leader of the Sinn Fein (in the Saxon tongue, “Ourselves Alone” :) party, which similarly kicked Moderate Irish Nationalist Social Democratic & Labour Party (SDLP) arse at the same elections.

    So.

    Instapundit says that

“The Madrid conference ended with a declaration which went some way to supporting Mr Trimble.”

Well good. / And good too that it didn’t go ALL the way.
