Lieberman to “suspend” campaign?
Posted by on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at 4:48 pm

As I just posted on the Command Post, “top sources” are telling the Drudge Report that Joe Lieberman is contemplating “suspending” his campaign. “It’s becoming clear that it is not Joe’s year,” source says. [Becoming? –ed.] Exit polls suggest Senator Joe will finish in fifth place, in single digits, tonight.

I am leaving work now, so I will be out of blog-contact for a while. I hope to be home right around the time the polls close (8:00 PM Eastern, 6:00 PM MST). In the mean time, please visit The Command Post for updates. Also recommended: Drudge, Wonkette, and PoliticsNH.com.

And, I Commented on TCP & now replicate here:

“Suspension” has been done before, though offhand I can’t recall by whom. It permits the Suspenders to remain, technically, candidates, while ceasing or pausing their active campaigning. It’s generally a prelude to withdrawal.

Maybe Joe will take some time assess the situation, especially re fundraising.

Maybe he could come home and promote a Favorite Son vote here in CT March 2, seeking to assemble a little bloc (blocette?) of delegates to have Influence at the convention. / But it would be a VERY small bloc. We’re a small state with a smallish delegation, & Joe can’t conceivably win all our delegates under the party’s proportional distribution rules.

Fact is, even as an Unsuspended candidate he could now come in 2nd to Kerry (our Neighbor to the North) here. (I think he’d still beat Dean but that could change too now, with the NH Comeback Doc and all.) Joe is too rightishly-perceived for a lot of CT Dems to stomach, though of course the state party establishment, including many of its liberals, loyally supports him. Obviously anything other than #1 in the Home State would be very very bad.

And, as a Suspender except for the CT primary — well. Might win an even-smaller slice of a smallish Delegation. Embarrassing.

Still gets my vote, though. (His name, with 7 others including the remarkable Lyndon LaRouche, is locked on to our ballot: legally too late to delete via withdrawal. Deadline was yesterday.)
