First PowerBook blog post (of many?)
Posted by on Friday, December 26, 2003 at 4:40 pm

I’m just posting this from the Apple Store because I want to test how it feels to use the keyboard of this 12-inch PowerBook.

Not bad. Not divine, but I wouldn’t expect any laptop to be divine. Hence my love of external keyboards. :) But, not bad.

Lalalala type type type I love Becky blah blah blah blah

UPDATE: Now I’m testing the 15″ PowerBook to see if it’s any more comfortable. Well… yeah, a little bit. But, hmm. I don’t know if the difference is worth it. The main advantage of the 15″ model is that, for not too much more money, I could walk out of the store with most of the features that I want in terms of hard drive space, high-speed wireless, etc. But I think I’m going to go home and deliberate on this some more. Hmm… the keyboard is nicer, though…

UPDATE: Now I’m over at the 12″ iBook testing out its keyboard. Pretty much the same as the 12″ PowerBook. As Keri said in comments, I think I’d get used to it. I mean, hey, I type on Becky’s iBook. It’s not my favorite, but I’d buy a keyboard and hook it up for use when I’m at home, and when I’m on the go, I’d deal. :)

I can’t actually buy anything here at the store anyway, because I need proof of my Notre Dame status. I think there may be a way around that online, so we’ll find out tonight. Otherwise I may be back here at the crack of dawn before my flight leaves tomorrow… though that would depend on when the store opens and when my flight leaves…

I am en route to the Apple Store in Phoenix to play with laptops, talk to a salesman, and hopefully make a decision. It turns out there is a Notre Dame student discount that I am already eligible for that could bring a PowerBook within reach. :)

Terror threat still looms
Posted by on Friday, December 26, 2003 at 1:23 am

Updating my lengthy post below… the Los Angeles Times now reports:

U.S. concerns about terrorist plots to hijack overseas flights headed for the United States remained intense on Christmas Day, officials said, even as French authorities reported that they had found no evidence that Al Qaeda operatives had planned to commandeer an Air France jetliner headed for Los Angeles.

U.S. intelligence officials said they continued to receive current and credible intelligence indicating that such an attack could be in the works — possibly a series of coordinated hijackings — and that Al Qaeda operatives could be targeting any number of overseas cities from which to launch such operations. …

“This is a broad and serious threat that is not going to disappear with the cancellation of one or two flights,” said one U.S. official who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“There is a lot of crisscrossing [intelligence] data that points to certain flights, certain times and certain countries,” the official added. “It’s not just in one location, point of departure or arrival. It’s not only France and it’s not only L.A.”

“My petrol!”
Posted by on Friday, December 26, 2003 at 12:59 am

Heh. Methinks ScrappleFace’s Scott Ott is a Lord of the Rings nerd!

A surprise offer by Saddam Hussein to personally lead U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney to Usama bin Laden’s mountain hideaway may have been inspired by one of ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies he has watched while being held by the U.S. military. …

Sources describe Saddam has being humiliated by his capture, somewhat deranged from his time underground and overly influenced by the character ‘Gollum’ in the ‘The Two Towers.’

Mr. Cheney is said to empathize with the former Iraqi leader since he and Saddam have both spent long periods isolated in undisclosed locations and have backgrounds in the petroleum business.

Saddam recently told interrogators, “We’ll be nice to them if they’ll be nice to us. We swears to do what you wants. We swears to serve the master of the petrol [his nickname for Mr. Cheney]. We will swear on…on the petrol! Yes, on the petrol; on the petrol.”
