Here is a picture of Hugh Manatee at a scenic overlook along Arizona's beautiful Salt River Canyon (taken yesterday, on the way back from N.M., but not posted because my cell phone wasn't getting a signal.)

I went home last night to have dinner with my family, and you’ll be happy to know, Brendan & Becky, my little sister thought “Hugh Manatee” was the single most clever name for a creature–living or inanimate–ever.
Also, the “Toby v. Saddam” segment was a hit with the aformentioned Texan 12-year-old. Expect a spike in hits from the San Antonio area preteen demographic. :)

Hi, I would like to have more information on the photo of that rock - approximate size, exact location, any other photos of the markings on the rock, etc. I have referred to your photo at my blog

Hello Andis,
I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t think I’ve taken any pictures of any ancient carved rocks. The central figure in my picture is not a carved stone that looks like a manatee, but rather, a stuffed animal of mine, a manatee whom I named “Hugh Manatee.” Here are some other pictures of Hugh:
But perhaps I misunderstand you. If you are suggesting that a piece of rock next to my stuffed manatee itself resembles a manatee… well, then you’ve noticed something that I did not. My only goal was to take a picture of my stuffed manatee in front of a scenic viewpoint. I wasn’t even looking at the rocks.
Regarding the exact location of the photo, I’m afraid I do not know. It is at one of the many roadside pullouts along Route 77 in Arizona, in the vicinity of the Salt River Canyon. If you really want to find the exact spot, I recommend driving that road from Holbrooke to Phoenix, and looking for hills matching the ones in the background. I am afraid that’s the best I can do in terms of location.
One additional note: you said “Hugh Manatee” is a “popular modern figure.” To what are you referring? My stuffed manatee is not named after any particular “modern figure”; rather, he got his name on the morning of December 25, 2001, when my father saw that my mother had bought me a stuffed manatee for Christmas, and proclaimed jokingly, “Oh the humanity!” So I’m curious… if there’s a cartoon character named Hugh Manatee or something like that, I was totally unaware of it.
