    Brendan,
I think you should do it again… when your system is working
    What do you think?

Nah, it wouldn’t be the same… I could time the lights and music to come on any time I want, of course, but you wouldn’t have the live audience counting down the seconds, and it just wouldn’t be authentic. There can only be one official beginning of the Brendan Loy Christmas season every year.

Besides, technical difficulties are very much part of the tradition, as you can see if you look at my video clips of past ceremonies (especially the one in 1997!).

I will do it again, though…. next year at around the same time. :) (Notre Dame graduate-student housing doesn’t know what it’s in for!!)

I am sorry about the webcam, though… I tried very hard to get it to work, and I had finally solved the software problems I was having earlier in the day, but then all of a sudden, the computer stopped recognizing the DV feed altogether. This happened around 7:45 PM, so there was no time for me to diagnose the problem and fix it… I tried unplugging it, rebooting and replugging, but when that failed, I had to give up and get going with the ceremony (it was like 7:54 by this point). As it turns out, the wire was the problem… maybe being outside in the slightly chilly (well, Arizona’s version of chilly) weather all day did something to it. I know for sure it was working as late as 7:15, but sometime between then and 7:45, it failed. I later used a different, shorter DV wire to make the video, and that one worked fine… which is good, because I would have caught hell if I had presided over a malfunction in the actual DV input on Becky’s computer! So I’m glad the wire was the problem :) … though it’s frustrating to know that I could have fixed it before the ceremony if I had run inside and grabbed the other wire… oh well.
