NYC from above
Posted by on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at 11:50 pm

The aerial views of New York City that I saw yesterday afternoon, taking off from LaGuardia en route to Philadelphia, were downright incredible.

Remind me to fly out of LaGuardia more often! The airborne sightseeing opportunities are totally worth it. I got a bunch more great pictures. Check ‘em out:

Central Park.

The middle section of Central Park, including the Great Lawn, the Met, and the Jackie Onassis Reservoir (note its fountain).

The southern end of Central Park, including the Sheep Meadow.

Midtown.

Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, and the rest of Lower Midtown.

Downtown.

The Statue of Liberty and (visible in larger version) Ellis Island, New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, and a bunch of boats in New York Harbor.

Yankee Stadium.

The South Bronx (including the southern end of the Bronx Zoo), the Whitestone Bridge, the East River and Flushing Bay, LaGuardia Airport and Rikers Island.

Brooklyn, including the three bridges to downtown Manhattan (the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn) and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to Staten Island.

The Throgs Neck Bridge.

The George Washington Bridge and the northern Manhattan neighborhood where I live.

From (roughly) bottom to top: Weehawken, Hoboken, and Jersey City; the Hudson River; the southern half of Manhattan; Brooklyn and Jamaica beyond; and Sandy Hook, New Jersey, in the distance.

Wow.

These are very fine, Brendan. Also very much in the available moment. You have the makings of a real photojournalist. Yeah, I know. Law school.

This is a very beautiful city. I enjoyed your pictures very much, I think they are the best on the internet. I am from Chile, from La serena City, one of the most wonderful cities of Chile.

    Dear Kevin,
    1. Hi! I am working for a small french production Company. They are doing a documentary about a french priest who has worked in the prison of Rikers Island for 20 years.
For the documentary, we will need 1 minute of the aerial footage of the Island. Do you have this kind of footage to sell? Or do you know where I can find it?
If not, how did you do it? Helicopter company? any suggestion?
Thank You very much for your help!!!!!!!!!!!
    Florence

    Hi Florence,

First off, my name is Brendan, not Kevin. :) Secondly, I’m afraid I don’t have any footage of Rikers Island. I took these pictures of Manhattan from the window of a jet plane taking off from LaGuardia Airport, not from a helicopter of anything like that.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help!

  10. Joe Loy Says:

You know, Patrick, :) Florence’s documentary must surely be about Father Pierre Raphael, who has served at Rikers for over 20 years and is co-founder and spiritual director of Abraham House. Clearly a good & holy man. “God’s work must truly be our own.”

A propos, nowait I mean By the way :), this Comment started out as a playfully (?) French-bashing one with forged names involving la Belette & fake URLs pointing to grenouille@fromagemanger.fr and other Inappropriate stuff like; and I was even managing to Shoehorn in ton homme M. Carion du Californie over at A Disc Of Sausage And Addition. :) / But when I found the info about the truly saintly Fr. Raphael I was so thoroughly Ashamed o’ meself that I Repented and deleted toute cette merde, as you see. :)

May Florence hire a good Chopper pilot and get the 1 minute of the aerial footage of the Island, and make a fine film about this fine man. Bonne chance! (Don’t forget to file the Flight Plan with Bloomie or somebody, Rikers I. is adjacent to La Guardia & we don’t want any inadvertent, well you know, contretremps over French crews buzzing the Joint with longbarreled lenses sticking out the door. :)
