A Picture from my PCS Vision Camera

Friday, October 31st, 2003

When I arrived at the football field with six minutes to go in the first half, Newington trailed #1 New Britain by a respectable 14-6. It is now 42-6 with two seconds left. I think I’ll head home after the halftime show…

Aurora & me

Friday, October 31st, 2003

Wow!

My dad and I got a fantastic aurora borealis show tonight near the border of Harwinton and Burlington in west-central Connecticut. We stopped in the parking lot of Johnnycake Airport, walked into a field on the Burlington side, and gazed north. At first, we weren’t sure we were seeing anything, but 15-second-exposure photos revealed a green tint in the sky. Then, roughly a half hour after we arrived, the geomagnetic activity increased substantially:

1:01 AM

1:37 AM

“Streaks” of light could be seen reaching up toward the heavens, and the wall of green light clearly got brighter and occupied more of the sky.

Some reddish and purple tint could even be seen. It was awesome!

It’s a good thing we went as far west as we did, because as this picture shows, the Greater Hartford light dome was definitely competing with the Northern lights:

Although we escaped the light dome, we still had to deal with the occasional car going by…

…and we created our own light pollution by taking silly flash pictures of ourselves in front of the auroras. :)

Check out this spooky photo where, appropriately enough for Halloween, I look like a ghost!

Anyway… it was AWESOME!!!

While we’re on the topic of the solar storm, here’s a photo that I took earlier in the day of the sunspots that produced all this, using metalized mylar to filter the sun’s light:

Woohoo!

Aurora hunting

Friday, October 31st, 2003

My dad and I are about to embark on a midnight drive in search of darker skies and Northern lights. Wish us luck!

I’m at my old high school’s athletic field for a boys-girls soccer doubleheader. At the very moment I walked in during the boys game, a fight broke out. I come to my first Newington soccer game in five years, and all hell breaks loose… :)

Let there be Northern lights!

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

The planetary K index has again reached its maximum level, 9, meaning the second “extreme” geomagnetic storm in as many days is in progress.

It’s dusk here in Connecticut, and the skies are crystal clear (unlike last night), so hopefully we’ll be able to see some Northern lights soon. “Sky watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras,” says SpaceWeather.com.

A little later, I may take a drive off west (where it’s darker), in hopes of spotting some aurora.

My new license is pretty. It has holograms. :)

Adios, Manny?

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

The Red Sox are trying to get rid of Manny Ramirez. I think this is a good idea. Manny’s a great hitter, but he’s an a**hole, a troublemaker, and a lazy bum. He makes life more difficult in the clubhouse, and the Red Sox could use that $101.5 million to boost their pitching staff (or to hire Joe Torre).

Capitol Hill intruder

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

A gunman (or possibly a gunwoman?) is loose on Capitol Hill.

UPDATE: The fog of war is settling in heavily. The gun might be a revolver, it might be .38 caliber or it might not, or it might be a toy gun. The backpack might be black and white, or it might be grey. The intruder might be a man, it might be a woman, or there might be two intruders, one man and one woman.

ILLEGALLY BLONDE?: The woman they are looking for is described as 20 to 25 years old, wearing a pink shirt and khaki pants, carrying a black purse and a maroon bag, with sunglasses on top of her head. Oh, no! Run for your lives! Reese Witherspoon is loose in the Capitol! :)

UPDATE: Police have released a photo of the female suspect:

Just kidding… :)

BOO: The intruders have turned themselves in. It was a toy gun, part of a Halloween costume.

If you’re going to terrorize Capitol Hill with a Halloween costume, I can think of some scarier outfits that you could wear. (Also, you might want to wait till tomorrow…)

Birthday blast

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

Another coronal mass ejection — the solar-wind blast from yesterday’s X10 solar flare (downgraded from X11 upon further review) — slammed into the Earth’s ionosphere just over an hour ago, around noon. Conditions are now favorable, again, for a strong geomagnetic storm. Hopefully they will remain so as night falls over the East Coast this evening. (Unlike yesterday, the skies here are now crystal clear.) So forget spooky Halloween lights; bring on the birthday auroras!

Yesterday’s Northern lights were great, where you could see them. Here in the Northeast, unfortunately, it was overcast most of the evening, and by the time the sky cleared (around 3:00 AM), the solar storm had mostly subsided. I walked across the street from my house to get a clear view to the north, but I couldn’t see nothin’, gul-darn it. But check out the view from Dover, Oklahoma:

Here’s the latest satellite map of auroral activity around the globe.

Meanwhile, you kind of have to feel bad for the Sun. With all these sunspots, it looks kind of like a zit-faced teenager. Our poor star must be feeling a bit self-conscious:

As always, check out SpaceWeather.com for all the details on all of this.

Happy Birthday to me

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

This morning at 9:22 AM, I will officially turn 22 years old. (Yes, I always mark my birthday at my birth time.) Since I doubt I will be awake and blogging at 9:22, I’ll say it now:

Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday dear mee-eee
Happy Birthday to me

And my co-workers made fun of me for having a narcissistic website… POSH! What were they talking about? :)

UPDATE: Out with the old and in with the new!
