Why, oh why, must the Red Sox suck so? I mean, I don’t mean to be overly demanding here, but generally when you’re playing head-to-head against the team with which you are competing for the final playoff spot, it helps to win at least half of your games, ideally more, rather than losing every night.
And to think, I bought tickets to the Red Sox-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium next month, figuring I’d be watching baseball’s greatest rivals play in the midst of a heated pennant race. Now the Sox are all of 7 1/2 games behind the Yankees (and 2 games out of the wild card spot).

Curse of the Babe, Brendan. Although that supposedly applies only to the World Series, I’d say it works toward a general mediocrity. Just be glad you have a supernatural scapegoat–the poor Cubs just plain suck. And hey, no matter how bad things get, BoSox-Yanks is always a fun game to watch. Plus, if Pedro’s on the mound, you’ve got yourself an instant classic. (No really, Clemens v. Martinez from 2002 was shown on ESPN Classic this summer.) You should be careful in the Bronx, though, and moderate your Red Sox pride. Yankee fans invented the battery-filled snowball.
Lovin’ the No-mah,
