We had a great view of the Bronx fireworks from our Manhattan roof! They were too far away for a cell-phone-blog photo, but here’s another pic from earlier this evening.

I just discovered that our NYC apartment has an accessible roof! Why didn’t I think of this before? There’s a great view. We may be able to see some fireworks in the Bronx tonight from here. Very cool!

Junk-mail filter thwarts do-not-call list

Alanis Morrisette, take note: This is ironic. During the first few hours of the new national “do not call” list for telemarketers, Yahoo Mail users who signed up for the list were unable to confirm their participation because the confirmation e-mails were blocked by Yahoo’s spam filter, which thought the messages were junk mail because so many were being sent out at once. Heh.

By the way, you can sign up for the do-not-call list at www.donotcall.gov. Ten million other people already have.

UPDATE: Make that 10,000,001 people. I just signed up my cell phone. :)

World’s oldest Cubs fan dies

The world’s seventh-oldest person and its oldest Chicago Cubs fan, Cleo Dunaway Craig, died Saturday morning at the age of 113.

The Cubs reportedly plan to mark Craig’s passing by failing to win the World Series, as they have done every year since she was 19.

My screwed-up state

Many states are facing fiscal crises these days, but most can manage to pass a budget without the governor a) sending state troopers to bully the legislature around; and b) violating the constitutional separation of powers with an illegal executive order. In John Rowland’s Connecticut, however, such things are to be expected, apparently.

UPDATE: My mom, referring to the subpoenas that the governor had his troopers deliver to legislators, comments in an e-mail: “Rowland then subpoenaed the Atomic Clock and the entire city of Greenwich, England, in an effort to delay the impending fiscal year.” Heh.

A Big Bite of the Big Apple
Posted by on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at 11:27 am

I had a great weekend in the city with Becky, Shannon and Adrienne. (Vicki’s plans changed at the last minute, so she, unfortunately, couldn’t join us.) We did a remarkable amount in three days: visited Times Square, Battery Park, Wall Street, Ground Zero, Little Italy, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, F.A.O. Schwartz, Central Park, and more; saw the musical I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; had a fantastic time with several hundred thousand of our closest friends at the gay-pride parade; ate at several wonderful restaurants, including the famous Carnegie Deli and a lovely Restaurant Row establishment called Marlowe’s (with a lovely waitress called Kate); and, back at the apartment, finished a bottle of Malibu rum and nearly finished bottles of Absolut vodka and peach schnapps. A good time was had by all (especially Shannon, who was practically bouncing up and down all weekend, so excited was she to be visiting New York for the first time).

Unfortunately, I can’t post any of my digital pictures yet, because they’re stored on the hard drive of my temperamental laptop, which has crashed again and thus rendered the photos inaccessible for the moment. (I just took the computer back to the repair shop in Queens that “fixed” it less than two weeks ago, so we shall see where that leads.) I have some great photos, though, so I’ll post them as soon as I can.
