Tonight at around 8:30 PM Eastern time, USA Today national high-school football player of the year Chris Leak — a quarterback — will announce his college choice live on ESPN2 (at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl high-school all-star game). According to sources close to Leak, as quoted in the Charlotte Observer, the smart money is on the University of Florida. But USC seems to be Leak’s second-most-likely choice, and there’s hope yet that the sources are wrong and Leak wants to be a Trojan. At least, that’s what I’m hoping. With Heisman winner Carson Palmer graduating, the Trojans desperately need a star quarterback.
UPDATE, 8:51 PM Eastern time: D’oh! He’s going to Florida, as expected. Oh, well.

According to the ESPN story, Leak will announce his decision today and will have a replica helmet and baseball cap to go along with it. I could be wrong, but I’d think it’s a lot harder finding a replica Trojan helmet in NC than it is a Gator one. :-/

So I’m watching the Army All-American Bowl, and on the East, we have two recruits we have a chance with: Andre Caldwell and Chris Leak. But on the West, it’s amazing, there are four guys who have already committed to USC” Reggie Bush and LenDale White (RB), Chris Barrett (TE), and Drew Dadovich (OL). In addition, the West has three more offensive players we might sign: Whitney Lewis and Steve Smith (WR), and Sam Baker (OL). We are the favorites along with OSU to land Baker, but I’ve heard Lewis or Smith might be headed to Cal. Still, it’s funny that a good chunk of that offense might as well be wearing ‘SC uniforms. I think Pete Carroll and Norm Chow are putting together one hell of a recruiting class!

Leak to Florida. Boooooo!!!!!! Nah, I wish him luck, but I pray he doesn’t take Andre Caldwell with him.
