If you watch the video you can see that he actually touched the ball twice with his hand and is was pretty blatant. I can see why the Irish National Team is fairly pissed.

Apparantly, the French player actually told the referee (after the match of course) that he handed the ball.

I’d be surprised to see a rematch, but hey stranger things have happened.

Wars have been fought, indeed. We were There (right, Brendan? :) during the much-celebrated Bicentennial but 2009 will definitely Not be memorialized in Eire as a Year of the French:

And pledge me the stout sons of France, boys,
Bold Humbert and all his brave men,
Whose tramp, like the trumpet of battle,
Brought hope to the drooping again.
Since Ireland has caught to her bosom
On many a mountain and hill
The gallants who fell, so they’re here, boys,
To cheer us to victory” still.

I dunno. If this Handball Larceny doesn’t get put right I fear there may be Flagburningsor even Worse ;).

Don’t count on a replay. FIFA’s money men now have the big French and Portuguese stars in the World Cup (apparently Russian don’t move the needle enough) and all is Right with the World.

All these calls for replay technology miss the point, too. Replay in the US doesn’t allow teams to challenge fouls and/or penalties. Are they seriously going to allow each team to stop play, say, up to three times and argue over whether a player handled the ball on a given play? I highly doubt it.
