State senator Carl Kruger is planning to introduce legislation that would ban the use of iPods, cell phones, and other devices that might distract a user while crossing the street because of three recent deaths in New York city.

The bill would ban the devices just when used while crossing the street, correct? Your post can be read either way — but I think the clearest reading of what you wrote leads the reader to believe that those devices will be banned throughout the city in all circumstances merely because they are dangerous when used while crossing the street.

Deaf people should also be banned from crossing the streets in New York.

Speaking of no iPods… did you catch this little gem from Peter’s last email? “Finally, with increased technological advancements, please note that iPods, MP3 players, cell phones and any personal digital assistants will not be allowed in classrooms during exams.”
Not their use during the exam, mind you… the whole shebang. So much for the honor code.

Anonymous, I hadn’t noticed that, but that’s ridiculous. I think I will write Peter an e-mail about it. Thanks.
David, I took the liberty of changing your headline to eliminate any confusion.

First they came for the iPods, and I did not have an iPod, so I said nothing…

The state senator should quit screwing with natural selection. This is nature’s way of thinning out the gene pool.

They should just ban stupid people from walking in the street. The iPod is just along for the ride!!!

Thanks Brendan, i understand how it was somewhat confusing. Of course i still think its rather ridiculous and as Mike put it to me an example of New York being a “nanny” state.

Of course I wonder how much of this has to do with the iPod users and how much to do with the driver of the car not stopping, and since the death was caused not by the iPod but by the car, shouldn’t we be banning the use of cars in crosswalks?

David, even by your standards that is an idiotic statement. If you are a driver going 35 miles per hour and some idiot who isn’t paying attention steps in front of your car with five feet of stopping space, how the hell is that the driver’s fault?

I dunno, I think I’m with David. We should ban cars in New York altogether. All that pollution and noise and stuff… Not to mention the hazards.
On a more serious note, can you imagine? “Sorry, I’m gonna have to call you back in 2.2 seconds–I’m about to cross a street.”

I suspect that New York would have just as much effectiveness (as with an iPod ban) if it tried to ban iDiots from crosswalks …
