Again with the Fiesta Bowl videos, oy!
Posted by on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 2:16 am

For those who missed Monday night’s epic Boise State-Oklahoma clash, here’s a lengthy YouTube video that contains just about every highlight you could possibly want from the game’s wild finish, including not just the trick plays you’ve already seen a hundred times on TV, but also Oklahoma’s tying touchdown and two-point conversion(s), the near-fatal pick-6 interception that put the Sooners ahead, and the key plays that preceded the trickeration:

If you’re in a hurry, though, and want to just see the OMG Best! Play! Ever! highlights, here’s a short clip showing the ridiculously amazing, sublimely beautiful, utterly impossible hook-and-lateral play on 4th-and-19 that tied things up in regulation, followed by the indescribably wonderful Statue of Liberty play that won the game in overtime:

Incidentally, this would probably be a good time to link to this incredibly useful website, which allows you to download videos from YouTube, Google Video, and various similar sites. I’m definitely downloading several of these for posterity. :)

Apropos of which, if you want to download highlights from overtime, I’d recommend using this Google Video URL instead of the above YouTube clips. I say that because Google Video clips can be downloaded in a wider variety of formats (I recommend the MP4 version; I’ve had trouble with the AVI files), and are generally better quality when downloaded than Flash files from YouTube. Unfortunately, nobody has yet uploaded a Google Video clip containing highlights from regulation — just the ones from overtime.

Anyway, here’s a video of Fox reporter Chris Myers idiotically botching Ian Johnson’s proposal to his cheerleader girlfriend:

Finally, here’s the first video I’ve seen taken by a fan at the stadium. WARNING: Profanity!

Did I say “finally”? Well, not quite: it’s not worth embedding, but fans of Rece Davis, Lou Holtz and Mark May (do such people exist?) might appreciate this clip of them giving “helmet stickers” to pretty much the entire Boise State team (though they somehow forgot Jared Zebransky! I think Lou flubbed his line) as well as the Bronco Nation.

    Hey Brendan,

You can buy the official Fiesta Bowl game DVD at this link:

Relive every moment in Boise State fashion.
Keep up the good work on the blog.

Fox Sports ranks the Fiesta Bowl as the 4th greatest bowl game ever…

…I actually have to agree that last year’s game between Texas and USC was a better game because it was close throughout and the fact that it was a national championship at the Rose Bowl gives it a certain level of importance.

I disagree with putting last year’s Rose Bowl ahead of this year’s Fiesta Bowl. Comparing the games themselves without looking at the implications, the Rose Bowl was a very very good game, but in terms of momentum swings and crazy-ass ridiculousness in the final few minutes, it wasn’t on par with either the 2005 USC-ND game or the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. And although I would normally agree with the logic that “it’s a national championship game, so that makes it more important,” this Fiesta Bowl felt like a national championship game — or in a certain sense, like more than a national championship game — because of the cosmic significance for mid-majors everywhere and the structure of the system. In fact, whenever I watch the winning play, I always feel like the end of the call — “and Boise State has won the Tosistos Fiesta Bowl!!” — is grossly inadequate. To really sum up the significance of that moment, the announcer would have had to say, “and Boise State has won, the BCS is busted, good has defeated evil, and the realm is Sauron is ended! Down with the aristocracy, up with the bourgeoise!” And then start singing the “Hallelujah Chorus.” :)

But I admit the 2006 Rose Bowl vs. 2007 Fiesta Bowl is a debatable issue, and I further admit that my opinion is hopelessly clouded by bias. (Of course I liked the Fiesta Bowl better — the team I was rooting for won!) I can honestly say that I’m 99% sure I would have the same opinion if the Trojans had completed that 4th-and-2, or had stuffed Texas on that 4th-and-5, but I can’t blame anyone if they discount my opinion on that basis.

What isn’t debatable, IMHO, and what makes Fox’s list pure crap and lacking all credibility, is putting the Miami-Ohio State title game ahead of both the USC-Texas Rose Bowl and the Boise-Oklahoima Fiesta Bowl. I mean, come on. Yes, it went to double overtime, but only because both teams were equally mediocre throughout regulation. That was an UGLY GAME with an exciting ending. The Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl were both well-played games with exciting endings. Give me a break. The Miami-tOSU title game shouldn’t even be in the Top 5.

When I read your earlier post about the 10 to 1 ratio of Boise to Oklahoma fans I thought perhaps you stole it from me .. then I realized it was posted at 11:36 EASTERN time - a good two hours before we ran into each other. I guess great minds think alike.
This is my first time at a computer since then, otherwise I would have been going comment crazy about that rollarcoaster ride of a game. I made Josh drive into Tempe after the game so we could celebrate … we were very confused when it was a ghost town.
    Stupid Glendale. :)
So sweet to see you and Becky there!!!
