Layout in limbo
Posted by on Monday, May 29, 2006 at 8:04 am

Please bear with me on the slightly funky layout and the grossly incomplete right sidebar. It’s a work-in-progress. But I decided to bite the bullet and start, because I gotta get this place all spruced up for hurricane season. :) Stay tuned…

P.S. Pop-up comments aren’t working for the moment. Sorry. If you click on the “comment” link, it will take you to the comment form on the permalink page. I’ll try to remedy that, and re-create the pop-up option, presently.

UPDATE: WTF? My blog has a mind of its own! It changed its own layout for no apparent reason!

UPDATE 2: Sometime this morning, while I was sleeping, the blog switched its layout from the newly installed “Journalized” theme (or rather, a modified version thereof) to the default WordPress “Kubrick” theme. I have no idea how or why this switch occurred. In an attempt to prevent it from happening again, I’ve deleted all themes except “Journalized,” so that should make it impossible for WP to switch to a different theme.

UPDATE 3: Well, that didn’t work! It just tried again to switch to the “default” theme, and since the default theme didn’t exist, my blog simply appeared blank for a few minutes. I have no idea what’s wrong with the “Journalized” theme that my WordPress is having an allergic reaction to it, but I’m very annoyed right now!! I will have to try again with this a bit later.

PS - “Looks like the default WordPress theme” ~ what was that Native American or Inuit joke where the tracker says “Ummph. Look like Moose sh*t.” :)

For a second there I thought I had come to an NSA mirror site. I figured I’d better pack my bags for GITMO.

Weird. It’s like, whoa man. This is freakin me out!

The layout is so funky, I can’t handle it! *pant pant*

  9. Brendan Loy Says:

It wasn’t supposed to be the default WordPress theme. It changed itself to the default theme. I have no idea why. AAAAH!!!

  10. Colin Pedicini Says:

It looks like layout changed to its state around 9 this morning (MDT).

Ancient Law of Computers - they don’t do things on a whim !

Example - site starts in one state … runs fine for a while … wetware makes change … site changes … likelihood is of cause and effect …

Now, if the result isn’t what you expected, this is not unusual … the computer has the absolutely worst aspect of a true slave - it does *exactly* what you tell it to do, and NOT what you want it to do …

“It changed itself to the default theme.” - that breaks the Ancient Law of Computers !

You probably have a clue in this “Sometime this morning, while I was sleeping, the blog switched its layout from the newly installed “Journalizedâ€? theme (or rather, a modified version thereof) to the default WordPress “Kubrickâ€? theme.” - {my emphasis} … is it possible that, after the “newly installed” part, you further need/needed to do something else site-related to ‘lock’ it in place ? Perhaps a daily/nightly something that is designed to ensure that the blog stays the way you really want it to be ?

Many software packages include a step that is a “Are you really sure?” step - and, when that step is omitted, the prior laboriously-prepared changes can seem to vanish …

Could that be anything like what is happening ?
