Website changes have taken a back seat to March Madness in recent weeks, but I wanted to get the ball rolling again (er, so to speak) with a question for y’all…
A number of people in recent days have reported problems with my new WordPress commenting system. Specifically, people keep saying that it has mysteriously swallowed portions of certain comments. I also know of at least two people who have been unable to comment at all while using AOL’s browser. So, I’m just wondering… how many people have experienced these, or other, commenting problems? How often? What are the problems? When they occurred, were you commenting via the pop-up window from the homepage, or via the comment entry form on the permalink page? I’d like to get a sense for how well this comment thingy is working for everyone, and what needs to be fixed/improved.
Also, supposing I can figure out a way to make the pop-up comment window resizable on all browsers, if you had a choice between that and a direct link to the comment area on the permalink page, which would you prefer? Now, same question, except suppose I’m not able to figure out a way to make the pop-up comment window resizable on all browsers. What then?

Swallowed a whole comment of mine two days ago. Still, given how I can bloviate, it was probably what I deserved. I re-typed. Was commenting on the pop-up comment box.

I was commenting from the pop-up box when I lost part of a comment. I think my internet connection hiccuped between my hitting the submit comment button and the comment fully loading, though it was very odd that it cut it off at an actual paragraph break. I prefer having the pop-up window, though I do miss the preview capacity it used to have. I know that previewing does exist under the permalink page, but I just don’t find that as convenient.
The other website issue I’ve noticed, at least, is that when I click on the Brendansphere link, I do get the sidebars, but posts themselves disappear. Your central portion of the page becomes blank under the Blogger of the Year nominee line except for a line of “Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.”

I have to admit I like the preview that the Permalink path gives … so a direct link to it for comments would suit me just fine …

pop-ups are the evil spawn of Staten and should be purged from the internet in fire and ice.

Why did you change from haloscan? That seemed to be working allright.

Well, for one thing, having the comments integrated with the actual posts is intrinsically better because it makes the permalink pages more cohesive units — everything is visible, everything is searchable, etc.
Also, having the comments hosted on another server leaves me vulernable to the other server going down, which happens sometimes with HaloScan.
And, HaloScan has its own problems, in terms of swallowing comments, not allowing more than a certain number of words/links, not linking back to the post in question, not allowing me to make a “most recent comments” page (which I haven’t done yet, but should be able to figure out how to do at some point), etc.

Ah I see. Well, I like the “look” of haloscan a whole lot better. Also, the window-resizing is an issue on my computer/browser (PC/Mozilla Firefox).
I definitely prefer the pop-up comment window to the permalink comments, since the window allows you to easily view/post comments in a compacted manner at the same time you are browsing, searching, doing research, etc. Basically, it’s similar to an instant message window at a snail’s pace. ;)

I appreciate the feedback, bink (and everyone else)… thanks.

You mean the island in New York?

I second bink’s explanation of popups over permalink commets. But the resizing issue is killing me.
And URIs don’t show in the popup window, either…
I do dig the real-time preview of the permalink comments, though.
Could you put the note with the html tags on the permalink window, too?

I prefer to be able to resize the pop-up comments window. I noticed that I can resize it somewhat in Firefox, but not in IE (which is what I have to use at work).

hmm, to try and pass the typo off as intentional based on my personal religious beliefs or to admit the error? Oh these are the questions that try men’s soles (sic, I do know it is spelled souls it was supposed to be funny, perhaps not ha ha funny, and now I’v gone an killed the joke.).
