Take that, hobgoblins
Posted by on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 12:58 am

As noted below, I bowled a 137 on Thursday night, besting my previous career high of 127.

Chris raises the roof for my 137.

I had a chance to do even better, but I only managed a 7 on my tenth frame. That’s probably just as well, though, as it will make the quest to outdo myself, and achieve a new personal best, a bit easier than if I’d gotten a 150 or whatever. :) Here’s a look at my game:

I was third on our team, which will probably never happen again, considering four of my bowling teammates are actually, like, good. Only the top four scores “count” for competitive purposes, so for just this once, I was actually “on the board”!

Joel 166
Chris 164
Brendan 137
Brian 110

Man… looking at my scorecard, I would have tied Chris’s 164 if only I had been able to convert three easy spare opportunities in the first five frames. Oh, well.

I followed up my glorious 137 with a not-so-glorious 78 — and I was lucky to do that well, considering I had just a 12 through three frames and a 30 through five. Consistency is overrated, I say. :)

I blame the giant tower of beer.

I was not “on the board” for that second game, which had a more typical result for our team:

Chris 201
Nick 166
Joel 156
Brian 119

I managed to squeeze in a third game before midnight, and in that one I broke a hundred in dramatic fashion: I started the tenth frame with a 94 on the board, and bowled a 3 with my first roll, bringing me to 97 with one roll to go. But I managed to knock down six pins on the last roll (alas, not the seven I needed for a spare and another roll), bringing me to a respectable total of 103. (Chris, meanwhile, snuck in a third and fourth game — and bowled 200 and 204!)

Anyway, I’ve gotten one game of 118 or higher each of the last three weeks, and tonight, I had a three-game average of 106, which I believe is the first time my average has ever been over 100 on a night when I’ve bowled two or more games. Not bad for a guy who got a 46 on the first night of Law School Bowling last year…
