The lost laptop
Posted by on Sunday, November 20, 2005 at 5:57 am

Updating my laptop crisis… we went to the restaurant this morning, just to be absolutely certain it wasn’t there. It wasn’t. Nothing has been turned in to the lost-and-found, and the valets did not report finding or receiving anything. So it is now about 99.9 percent certain that my laptop is lost and gone forever, along with the entire contents of the large carry-on bag that it was in. Either we left it in the parking lot while transferring luggage and someone subsequently found it and took it for their own, or else it was stolen out of Adrienne’s trunk sometime between the luggage transfer and our arrival hours later at her apartment (perhaps during Harry Potter). Either way, it’s gone. I will file a police report (I’ll have to, in order to file an insurance claim), but I don’t hold out any hope of getting it back. If a good samaritan was going to turn it in after finding it in the parking lot, common sense says they would have brought it to the restaurant, not the police.

I’m basically going through the stages of grief over this. The situation got far worse when I realized that one of my two external hard drives, containing all sorts of irreplaceable data (not my photos, but I believe some of my music and movies), was also in the bag. And that’s not all. I keep thinking of additional things that were in the bag — like, for example, my cell-phone charger. As if losing my laptop and tons of data wasn’t bad enough, my normal state of constant connectivity is about to be further diminished because it’s now impossible for me to recharge my cell phone until I buy a new charger. ARGH!!! And I already mentioned the Cyberlaw problem. How am I supposed to study for my exam Tuesday morning when my textbook and syllabus are both languishing at some thief’s house? AAAAHH!! Well, at least I’ll have a unique excuse when I fail out of law school… :|

(Forgive me, I’m feeling rather pessimistic and cranky at the moment, for obvious reasons.)

Oh, well. I’ll survive. But this really sucks.

    Again very very Sorry.

“I’ll survive. But this really sucks.”

So it does. / And, so you will.

“If a good samaritan was going to turn it in after finding it in the parking lot, common sense says they would have brought it to the restaurant, not the police.”

So it does but people are not always Commonsensible. / Maybe a Cop happened to be Parked in the parkinglot just when the honest person from Samaria found it and s/he turned it in to him/her. Maybe Natalee Holloway will turn up healthy & Happy :> in the White Sex-Slave Trade too but there’s yer 00.1% Hope.

Hang In, old Kiddoe. This too shall Pass.

  2. A Nun Mouse Says:

Losing stuff sucks. (I know you said that already.)

  3. Swarthington Says:

On behalf of the entire Board of the Leahy Lounge, condolences.

Catastrophe of the first magnitude, Brendan. I shudder to think about losing my own laptop. Hang in there, buddy. You’re gonna pull through this is be all the stronger for it.

  4. Leila Says:

Oh Brendan that blows. But a year from now, you’ll look back and it’ll be ok. I would hate to lose my laptop, although I hate to admit how much I depend on it.

    I can’t believe you’re getting married in 40 days, that’s so awesome :).

And Narnia’s only in 19 days? I’m reading “The Horse and His Boy” right now. I want to go to Narnia.

  5. Kate Says:

Huge bummer . . . but why on earth were you carrying an external hard drive with you for a weekend visit?

  6. Charles Says:

    Huge bummer, aye.

But here is the good news!

I have the multi-Xeon, 1 gig server and I am working on them.

You should be up and running the blog on your own quad-processor, 2 gig RAM server, with a SCSI RAID-5!

  7. Keri Says:

hey, why don’t you check out the USC bookstore/library while you’re around? You may end up with a workable textbook situation at least, either a new book (in hopes some USC Law prof assigned the same book) or something you can copy in the library?

  8. Charles Says:

We can transition after the Thanksgiving day holidays…

Lisa, my gf, gave me a stern look. One of those, “Oh, no you are not going to spend Thanksgiving week working on servers,” type of looks.

    You men know the kind.

Okay, let’s see, you just watched a movie about a hero who overcomes problems. You have a problem. Stop wallowing and get creative! Send out a request to your ND’s back home to digitize the CyberLaw materials you need and email them to you. Then use Becky’s computer, etc. All is not lost. Just think it thru and find solutions!

  10. tbone Says:

Did you have your class notes on that thing? Do you need any notes from Evidence or Patent Law?

  11. Brenda Says:

You think that is bad, my hairdresser quit and is going to ……omg law school. My life is ruined, well ok not my life, but my hair…:(

  12. Andrew Says:

‘Twas an ugly blemish on an otherwise fabulous weekend.

  13. Benjamin Says:

If it’s any consolation, I used to be a foreign correspondent in Eastern Europe, and I can’t tell you how much stuff I lost/got stolen, whereas when I’m at home, I’m so meticulous about my stuff and in daily life and the commute, I can’t think of anything that’s ever really been misplaced.

Travel causes circumstances to arise that you’re not used to, for decisions to be made that are atypical, and thus for things to be lost/stolen. Surely it doesn’t help the anguish — I almost got into a fistfight with some Czech who I was (am) convinced stole a Minidisc player I needed to file a story — but hopefully provides a logical explanation.
