Donate to the Salvation Army’s Katrina relief effort! Or choose whatever charity you prefer, but donate! (The whole blogosphere is uniting for the relief effort today. Explanation here. Alternative charity suggestions welcome in comments. And don’t forget to consider “matching funds” if you work for a company that does that.)

If you have a different charity you’d like to recommend, please do so here in comments. Please use the comments on this post ONLY to talk about charities. Put unrelated comments on other posts, please. Thank you! :)
Here is a good site with information about charities and their efficiency, etc. Here’s another.

The Google ads are a great idea… however, it’s a little unfortunate that they’re advertising hotels in New Orleans, don’t you think?

Yeah…

I recommend the American Humane Society

I’m sure your cats and dogs approve, Brendan!

Also various religious groups operate charities you might donate to, and don’t forget to check with your employer to see if they do matching funds

When Hurricane Isabel’s storm surge hit part of Baltimore hard two years ago, the Salvation Army was the first in, and was still there serving meals to displaced families months later, after everyone else was gone. The Salvation Army is the real deal.

Catholic charities does a fabulous job. Very low overhead, as many of the workers are volunteers, clergyfolk on small stipends, etc. Thanks for posting this on the left hand side of the main page, Loy.

Brendan, Yours has been the first post we turn to in the morning and the last one checked before turning in at night. Thank you for the energy, effort and heart you have put into this. From books to blogsites, Tolkien to Loy, I am amazed to see once again how powerful and significant the work and words of a single individual can be. May we as a nation realize that truth as we work through this together.

Best buy has it set up in the store for you to donate supplies or money, and they in turn match the value of the items or monetary donation. Great way to double what you give!!
September 1st, 2005 at 9:30:40 am
We just gave another 500 to best buy for the Katrina relief effort( my hubby works at BB) !!

Help them? Do you mean the ones that are raping, looting and shooting at the helo’s? Are those the ones? Yea, sure… Do I really feel like this. No. But, it sure does piss me off to see these lawless idiots running around. Its very hard to believe the images on TV are from the USA. An embaressment actually. Ok, Rant is off. I feel a little better but not much…

Brett Favre has been organizing an effort to bring much needed supplies to the area. He also indicated that any money donated to his foundation would be guaranteed to be sent to help people in the area.
I believe it’s the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation.
I’m a Bears fan and hate all things Packers, but I have to give the man credit.

Anyone getting ANY kind of information online about what’s happening in downtown BR with the refugees?
At my building, we’re hearing that one building near us housing refugees had a riot, the cops shot one person, an evacuation was done, and that the SWAT team was sent in!
Not confirmed by anyone but, considering everything happening in the ruins of NO right now, we can certainly believe it happening!
SOMEONE please follow up on this, as I’m not in a position to do so for long!

DowntownBR, where are you? I’m in the Claiborne Building across from Casino Rouge and we’re not having problems here, though the rumors are flying.

I’m in the LaSalle Bldg (Dept. of Natural Resources and Dept. of Revenue And Taxation) and we’ve been hearing all kinds of stories.
One was the one I listed above.
Another is that people are leaving the River Center / Centroplex and trying to hold up city/parish employees off of Government St.
Yet another coming from the eastern half of town is that banks are sending home their employees because the refugees are getting rowdy.
Currently, our building is under lockdown and all employees re-entering the building are having to go through metal detectors to come back in.
Considering the official position of the police and management is “It’s all rumors, nothing being said is true”, I’m not feeling reassured.

Be sure to register your Brendan-inspired Salvation Army donations at NZ Bear (see Michele Malkin’s site for link). It’s a friendly competition, and I was glad to credit Brendan in this way because I’ve been grateful for the coverage he’s provided over the past week.

I donated at the salvation army link and am not sure if it took or not…very slow and did not say thank you or anything…is it a legitatmate site? I would have liked to be able to print off a receipt for my records.
thanks

Things seemed to have calmed down, at least according to WJBO.
That said, there’s not enough money in the world to make me take my normal route home down River Road b/t the RiverCenter and the Kidd.

I just wanted to mention a few other ideas for those wanting to give but not sure where to find the cash. The Red Cross site suggests, frequent flier miles and Lynn Says:

Thank you for this site! I just contributed to Catholic Charities online. I agree that the Humane Society is a good charity. They have trained volunteers that will go into devastated areas to rescue animals and return them to their owners, if possible.

Good idea about the google ads, but you may want to remove the “donate to charity” thing because that might end up disqualifying your clicks (they have a term of service that says something about ‘enticing’ people to click or something like that).
Just fyi. Good idea though

Brendan, I know you think you’re just reporting what you see elsewhere, but you’re helping people. God bless you.

I am an English professor at University of New Orleans, safely in exile in St. Louis. Your blog has been critical these past few days and I thank you for your efforts and for an alternative voice to mainstream.
The U of New Orleans is up and running on a limited capacity but there is now a fund for donations to helping the university recover.
To help rebuild the University of New Orleans, send donations to:
UNO Recovery Fund
in care of
Dr. Robert Rasmussen
3810 West Lakeshore Drive
Baton Rouge, LA 70804
It is vital to have this institution up and running again, not only because I teach there, but because its mission is to serve the city of New Orleans. Most of the studentpopulation are from NO and will continue to live there after they attain degress. This university is central to the city’s functioning as a cultural and economic gateway for many economically disadvantaged groups. Please help us get back on our (webbed) feet!

if you can, find a place to post this weblink:

It states that In a directive from our university president, Arizona State University has opened its dormitories and classes to Katrina victims who were students in New Orleans. This includes all of ASU’s Schools, including Law.
An expedited registration has been instituted. Private community individuals also are taking in some of these students.
For more information, please see the website above, call (480)965-312, fax (480)965-7722, email registrar@asu.edu (or myself, kade@asu.edu).

Heard you on the radio. I don’t think your blog is listed on the contribution site. You’re not getting credit for our contributions….

Here’s a site that lets you shop for the cause of the relief effort. You just shop via this site and a % of the purchase goes to the Red Cross.
No donation needed - the money comes from the merchants. Please spread this link around on other blogs, as it will raise more funds from people that might not otherwise donate.
