Sure, it’s definitely racist, but then so are most comedians (well, black comedians at least, but there are others).
The first two statements, about “fags” and lefties pushing immorality and communism on us, are definitely kind of JBS-or-worse reactionary-ish, but it’s a line of argument you’ll find in churches all over this great land. It’s definitely an extreme, straight-laced “conservative” viewpoint, and there are plenty who believe some shade of it. Usually you hear this kind of thinking from a stodgy old-grandpa-type, but I have read some pretty insightful and intellectually forceful arguments along these lines, by Robert Bork and a few others. You might even categorize some of David Horowitz’s stuff as being along these lines.
The third paragraph is spoken in an extremely demeaning way but is nevertheless mostly true. Starting in the ’60s, black families totally imploded. Thirty years later, 2/3 of black kids have never had a relationship with their biological father, black males disproportionately end up in jail, and black women disproportionately end up as welfare moms (although welfare reform has helped improve that situation). Blacks also have high rates of teenage pregnancy, abortion, and STDs (if you discount gays’ STD rates for each of the ethnic communities). Mexicans, in contrast, generally follow the typical immigrant pattern that we’ve witnessed throughout our history. The comments about them stealing and being dishonest is more due to the fact that as immigrants, they make up the poorer segments of society and thus get caught up in those kinds of crimes more often. The same was probably true of Italians, Poles, and the Irish when they first came across and before they were recognized as equals to or members of the “native” population.
The fourth paragraph is just so amusingly twisted Machiavellian, I love it.
The last one is, sadly, mostly true, too. Jews disproportionately took up communism, lefty-liberalism, and academic disciplines (especially the social sciences). Read some David Horowitz. Or better yet, read some Orthodox/religious Jewish commentary on secular Jewish culture. It’s kind of funny how these kinds of criticism are acceptable coming from the Orthodox, but if Nixon says it, he’s an anti-Semite, when in reality he didn’t hate Jews per se, he hated left-wingers, who happened to be disproportionately Jewish. It is a very slippery slope though, as we’re seeing today with those who fume against Israelis and Zionism slipping into hatred of Jews in general.
Overall, these quotes disturb me not for their content, which is unsurprising to me, but more because they reflect a very conspiratorial state of mind. Never mind the racist and politically incorrect language; I’ve heard worse from lots of comedians, and even just friends (of various ethnicities) joking around. What stands out here is that obviously Nixon tended to assign people into groups and give them stereotypes, which is not wrong in and of itself and is something we all do to some extent, but you can tell by what he says that the line between individual and group has deteriorated so sharply, his mind had recessed into near madness.
The other thing that weirds me out about Nixon is he was obviously a typical paleo-conservative in his ideology, almost extremely so, but politically he was so pragmatic that he ended up adopting positions and appointing judges that left him the legacy of a conciliatory moderate. I’m thinking here of detente, opening diplomatic relations with communist China, nuclear talks with the Soviets, price controls, withdrawal from Vietnam, creation of regulatory agencies like the EPA, and the list goes on. Yet, at the same time, the enmity Nixon had for his political and ideological opponents was possibly surpassed only by their hatred of him. Very ironic. Not to mention he was re-elected in a landslide, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) landslides in American presidential electoral history, yet was forced to resign in the wake of Watergate. Quite a strange legacy, indeed.
